Things to consider when relocating

The global pandemic has made people stop and think about how and where they live. The shift towards working from home has prompted many to relocate from big cities to more rural areas as they no longer need an office.

If you’re thinking of relocating within the UK, congratulations! You’re on the cusp of a big, exciting change. However, there are lots of things to consider when relocating. To help you make a very big decision, we’ve put together a list of things to think about as you plan your move.

1. Location

This may seem needlessly obvious but really think about the location you’re considering. What are the transport links like? If you’re going to commute, how long will it take? Trains in rural areas, for example, are not necessarily as regular as urban dwellers are accustomed to.

You will of course build a new support network when you move, but also think about how long it will take to reach family and friends from your new home. Relocating within the UK should be an exciting, positive experience rather than leaving you feeling isolated.

2. The local property market

Have a look at the kinds of properties you could afford to rent/buy. Do they tally up with what you’d hoped or will you be compromising for a more desirable location? With so many people relocating within the UK to more rural areas, property prices rocketed. We’re seeing this settle but make sure you check local prices and/or talk to a local estate agent about the current market.

3. Cost of living

The cost of living varies across the country and may impact how you feel about moving. Look at things such as council tax and the kinds of shops nearby, and if you opt for somewhere rural keep in mind you may have increased travel costs.

4. Lifestyle

When relocating, try not to fall victim to a ‘grass is greener’ mind-set. Somewhere you visit on holiday, for example, may be heaven for a week or two, but try to imagine your real, day-to-day life in the area. Can the new location support your desired lifestyle? Think about the shops and restaurants you visit, the activities you enjoy, the places you go, the services you use such as dentists and doctors. Are they all catered for or are you willing to compromise?

Lots of our clients are relocating to Southampton or wider Hampshire and even Surrey. This suits lots of people from more urban areas as it’s the perfect balance of coastal/county living with the local amenities of a bustling national hub.

5. Job opportunities

Even if you keep your current job, that may not be the case forever. It’s worth having a look at local job opportunities even if you’re not planning a change just yet. It will give you an idea of future possibilities as well as a ‘feel’ for the area as a whole.

6. Children

If you’ve got children or are planning on raising a family, anything relating to them will be a huge consideration when relocating. Scope out local childcare, schools, colleges, activities, sports facilities, play areas, doctors and dentists to ensure your new home will support your whole family.
