Why buy a property in Alresford?

Alresford is a popular market town near Winchester, on the edge of the South Downs National Park. Visitors are enchanted by the beautiful Georgian architecture and feeling of true community spirit, not to mention the interesting history that has helped shape such a unique place. Unsurprisingly, it has been selected as the No 1 Best Place to live in the Countryside by The Sunday Times and voted Country Life’s ‘Favourite Market Town’ in the southeast.

Architecturally, Alresford is a product of its past.  While there is evidence of Neolithic, Bronze Age and Iron Age occupation in the area, New Alresford (now Alresford) was founded in the 12th/13th century. It became a thriving market town, specialising in wool.

However, in the 17th century, the town suffered tragedy as fire after a fire destroyed over a hundred buildings. This led to extensive rebuilding in the 18th century, much of which remains to this day as the beautiful and iconic colour-washed Georgian homes and shops.

Alresford has one infant, one junior and one secondary school; sports facilities; hotels; delightful tea rooms; boutique shops; heritage Watercress Railway Line; and regular markets. The town hosts several annual events such as the agricultural show, a fair, a watercress festival, bonfire night and a duck race. Whatever your age: there’s plenty to see, do and get involved with.

When travelling further afield, trains from nearby Alton station run directly to London in just over an hour, while the capital is easily reached by car from Alresford in an hour and a half. Winchester is to the southwest while the South Downs on your doorstep are ideal for leisure time in the country.
